What Laikipia costs
And why the house you can take whole is often the best value in Kenya.

What the conservancy fee pays for
Anti-poaching and rhino monitoring, conservancy management, and — on community conservancies — direct income to the communities who own the land. It is generally built into your camp rate rather than billed separately.
It is not a luxury premium. It is what keeps 9,500 square kilometres unfenced.
Why houses are good value here
Laikipia has an unusual number of owner-run houses that take exclusive-use bookings — four to six bedrooms, a cook, a guide and a vehicle dedicated to you.
Because they are priced for the property rather than per head, the per-person cost falls as your party grows. Above about six people it is frequently cheaper than putting the same party into a camp, and you get total flexibility on meals, drives and what the children do.
For a family or a group of friends, this is our first suggestion in Kenya.
What moves the price
- Season — less pronounced here than in the Mara, but present
- Party size — vehicle and guide are per vehicle, and houses are per property
- Which conservancy — bed density and lease costs vary considerably
- Activities — riding and multi-day walking with fly camps carry supplements at most places
- Flying or driving from Nairobi — the road is manageable here, which is unusual in Kenya
