Context

No gate, no single fee, no park rules

Laikipia confuses people because it does not work like anywhere else in Kenya.

What Laikipia actually is

A plateau of roughly 9,500 square kilometres north-west of Mount Kenya, held as a patchwork of private ranches, community conservancies and group ranches. Some are pure conservation; some are working cattle operations that also carry wildlife; several are community-owned, where the conservancy income is the community’s income.

There is no park boundary and no single entry fee. Access is through the camp you stay at, and the conservancy fee is usually built into its rate.

Rhino, and why Laikipia matters

Laikipia holds a significant share of Kenya’s rhino, across several conservancies. Lewa, on the eastern side, is a long-established conservancy inscribed as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Mount Kenya; Borana adjoins it, and the fence between them has been removed so the two function as one rhino range.

Wild dog do well here too — Laikipia is one of the better places in Kenya to see them — along with Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe at the southern edge of their range.

How the conservancies differ

  • Eastern Laikipia (towards Mount Kenya) — greener, higher, strong rhino numbers, more infrastructure
  • Central and western — drier, wilder, quieter, bigger skies
  • Community conservancies — the conservancy fee is direct community income, and the guiding is often the most interesting in the region
  • Working ranches — cattle and wildlife together, which is the model that made Laikipia viable

Why we do not rank them

Because the right conservancy depends entirely on what you want to do. One is excellent for riding and has no walking to speak of; another is the reverse. Tell us the activities and we work backwards — it is the only method that produces a sensible answer.
