After dark

A completely different set of animals

Half the mammals in Laikipia are nocturnal, and in a national park you will never see one of them.

What you might see

  • Aardvark — genuinely rare, extraordinary, and the reason serious people do night drives
  • Porcupine — surprisingly large and utterly unbothered
  • Genet and civet — common, beautiful, and everywhere once you know to look
  • Springhare — like a small kangaroo, eyes reflecting in the hundreds
  • Striped hyena — scarce and much shyer than the spotted
  • Bushbaby — in the trees, announcing themselves loudly
  • Leopard — often on a kill, and considerably more relaxed at night
  • White-tailed mongoose, bat-eared fox, owls of several kinds

What it is actually like

You go out after dinner, usually for an hour and a half to two hours. A spotter works a filtered red-lensed lamp across the bush while the guide drives slowly. It is cold — bring the fleece — and there are usually blankets and a drink.

The rhythm is different from a day drive: long quiet stretches, then sudden eyeshine, then a pause while everyone works out what it is.

Why parks forbid them

Kenya’s national parks close to visitors at dusk, for reasons of enforcement, poaching control and animal disturbance. Those are reasonable rules and they apply everywhere from the Mara to Amboseli.

Conservancies are private land, so the landowners decide. Most Laikipia conservancies permit night driving with restrictions on lamp use and vehicle numbers.

On spotlights and disturbance

Good operators use red or filtered lamps, keep them off animals’ eyes, do not follow hunting predators, and stop after a set time. If you find yourself on a drive that does none of that, say something — and tell us afterwards.
